Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the effect of a group-based tic-control program to reduce symptom frequencies and to alleviate emotional problems of the children diagnosed with chronic tic disorder. This tic-control program was based on the principle of habit-reversal training. It consisted of teaching sessions which assist the children to recognize the undesirable situations which induce or aggravate their tic symptoms and concrete training sessions which help the children to control their symptoms with habit-reversal or relaxation methods. Fourteen children diagnosed with tic-disorder participated in this study. Their age ranged from 3rd to 5th grade in elementary school. Each participant was randomly assigned to either an experimental group(7 children) or a control group(7 children). Tic-control group sessions were conducted by investigator once a week for 6 weeks (6 sessions in total). Before and after the program, YGTSS, CDI, STAIC were administered to estimate the effect of the program on these scales. Only the children in the experimental group showed statistically significant decrease in motor tic frequencies and the degree of their depressive mood. The implication of this study is that this is the first korean attempt to conduct tic-control programs as a group program and to prove the effectiveness and usefulness of this program.
